Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
